Add Media to Your Site

As discussed earlier, you can use the text editor to add pictures, and the upload browser to add images, videos and slideshows. Your site comes with 50 megabytes of storage as standard so you will need to think carefully about how you use this. In addition, we have created you a file storage account at http://www.mediamax.com where you can store an additional 25 gigabytes of media files and link them to your site.

Using the upload browser to add files to your 50mb Wordpress site storage.

  1. In the Upload browser underneath the text editor, click browse. Select the image you wish to upload from your computer. The following file types are allowed:
    • JPG –Image file, most commonly used for photos
    • JPEG –Different extension for the same image format, commonly used for photos
    • PNG –Image file format which uses lossless compression, which generally means better quality but greater file size. Can contain transparency
    • GIF -Image file, most commonly used for images with flat colours, such as logos. Not great for photos but can contain transparency and simple animations
    • PDF –Adobe’s Portable Document Format. Readable using Adobe Acrobat.
    • DOC –Word processing document. Created and readable by Microsoft Word or Open Office Writer
    • PPT –Powerpoint presentation file. Created and readable by Microsoft Powerpoint or Open Office Impress
    • ODT –Open Document Format. Used for spreadsheets, charts, presentations and word processing
  2. Once selected, use the buttons to choose how you want the file displayed:
    • In full size on the page (best for small to medium sized images)
    • As a small thumbnail, which users can click on to enlarge (best for big images)
    • Just display its title as a text link to the file (best for documents)
  3. If you choose to link to the file, using a thumbnail or the file title, you can choose to either link directly to the file, to a new page containing the file, or choose none to not link at all. Once you have decided how to display the file, place the cursor where you wish the file to appear and press Send to Editor.
